Entrepreneurship PYQ 5M
Entrepreneurship is the process of identifying an opportunity, bringing together the resources needed, and creating a new venture that delivers value, while bearing the risk involved.
Classic definitions
- Joseph Schumpeter: entrepreneurship is innovation: carrying out new combinations (new products, methods, markets, sources of supply, organisations).
- Management view: entrepreneurship is purposeful innovation, searching for change, responding to it and exploiting it as an opportunity.
- Richard Cantillon / Frank Knight: entrepreneurship is bearing risk and uncertainty: buying at a known price to sell at an uncertain one.
Nature and features
- Innovation: a new product, process or business model, or a new way of doing an old thing.
- Risk-bearing: money, time and reputation are put at stake with no guaranteed return.
- Opportunity-seeking: spots unmet needs and gaps in the market.
- Value creation: creates value for customers, jobs for workers, and wealth for society.
- Organising resources: combines land, labour, capital and technology into a working enterprise.
- Dynamic process: continuous, adapting to market and technology changes.
- Profit and growth orientation: profit is the reward for risk and innovation.
- Creative and purposeful activity: goal-driven, not luck alone.
Example: Deepinder Goyal noticed people struggling to find restaurant menus online, started a menu-listing site in 2008, and grew it into Zomato, a food-delivery company employing thousands. Spotting the gap, taking the risk and organising the business is entrepreneurship.
