Who Are You, Really?

Self-Discovery

Self-discovery is the process of finding out your strengths, weaknesses, interests, values and purpose.

Process of self-discovery

  1. Reflect: think about what you enjoy, what you are good at and what drains you.
  2. Seek feedback: ask people who know you well.
  3. Try new experiences: clubs, internships, volunteering show hidden abilities.
  4. Identify values and beliefs: what matters most to you (→ 1.5).
  5. Set direction: turn what you learn into goals (→ 1.4).

Self-Awareness

Self-awareness is the ability to see your own thoughts, feelings, strengths and weaknesses clearly, and to understand how others see you.

Benefits of knowing oneself

  1. Better decisions, including career choice.
  2. Clearer goals.
  3. Better relationships: you understand your effect on others.
  4. Confidence based on facts, not guesses.
  5. Better control of emotions and stress (→ 1.8).

Methods of self-analysis

  1. Introspection and journaling: writing down thoughts and reactions daily.
  2. Feedback from others: teachers, friends, mentors.
  3. Personality tests: such as personality type questionnaires (→ 3.9).
  4. Johari window: below.
  5. Personal SWOT analysis: below.

Johari window (Joseph Luft and Harrington Ingham, 1955)

Known to self Not known to self
Known to others Open: what you and others both know (your name, skills you show) Blind: what others see but you don't (a habit of interrupting)
Not known to others Hidden: what you know but hide (a fear of failure) Unknown: what nobody knows yet (an untested talent)

Personal SWOT Analysis PYQ 10M · other

SWOT analysis is a planning tool that studies Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats. Used by businesses, and by individuals for career planning.

Framework

Helpful Harmful
Internal (within you or the business) Strengths Weaknesses
External (outside, in the environment) Opportunities Threats
  1. Strengths (internal, helpful): skills, qualities and resources that give an advantage.
  2. Weaknesses (internal, harmful): gaps and habits that hold you back.
  3. Opportunities (external, helpful): outside chances you can use: jobs, trends, courses.
  4. Threats (external, harmful): outside risks: competition, changing technology.

How to do one for yourself

  1. List honestly under each heading; ask a friend to check.
  2. Match: use strengths to grab opportunities.
  3. Fix: turn weaknesses into improvement goals.
  4. Guard: plan against threats using strengths.
  5. Review every few months.

Example: final-year IT student

Strengths good at Python · strong final-year project · hardworking
Weaknesses hesitant in GDs · weak in aptitude speed
Opportunities campus placements · growing AI and data jobs · free online courses
Threats heavy competition · automation of routine coding jobs

Advantages of SWOT analysis

  1. Clarity: a full picture on one page.
  2. Simple and cheap: needs no special tools.
  3. Goal-setting: shows what to build on and what to fix.
  4. Career planning: matches abilities with the job market.
  5. Turns weaknesses into plans instead of worries.
  6. Prepares for risks before they arrive.
  7. Useful for interviews: gives honest answers to "strengths and weaknesses" questions.
